How often do you get to wake up between two countries?
Situated on the banks of the Kolpa river, geographically the Big Berry Lifestyle Resort is located in Slovenia. But if you fancy taking a swim, make sure you bring your passport, as Croatia is just metres away from your front door.
From the start
We were in good hands right from the moment Alberto collected us from Novo Mesto bus station.
During the 35-minute drive along the twisty road to Big Berry Lifestyle Resort, he took his time explaining, going into great detail about the area and all the places we should visit.
Once we arrived at the resort there was some lighthearted joking that with all the greens, we might be mistakenly at a military camp. Still, once we checked into to our Big Berry mobile home, it was clear nothing could be further from the truth.
With each mobile home decorated with designer furniture, there was enough space inside to accommodate even the largest of groups with all the conveniences and faculties a modern traveller could ask for.
It was clear that Big Berry Lifestyle Resort had just raised the bar and taken the glamping experience to the next level.
Welcome to Big Berry
Walking inside our Big Berry home for the first time I was greeted with a personalised welcome basket that included products from local partners and producers.
It was a great surprise, to say the least.
Along with a welcoming note, the basket contained a selection foods and juices that included:
- Belokranjska pogača from Domace dobrote Mojca
- Honey from Čebelarstvo Veselič
- Pure butter from Zlati Ghee
- Walnut oil from Oljarna Pečarič
- Apple juice from Kmetija Zupančič
- Liqueur from Berryshka
- Beer from Pivovarna VIZIR
Also inside the basket, there were two small bottles of Big Berry customised shower gel made from Alp herbs.
Produced by Slovenian company AlpStories, the gel was the perfect addition for a shower after our journey from the UK and had a nice spicy fragrance.
The Big Berry Experience
So what exactly is Big Berry all about?
Well according to the brochure waiting for us inside our Big Berry mobile home:
Big Berry is a new system of mobile homes characterized by comfort and design. It is dedicated to tourism: camping, resorts and innovative hotels. A variety of home proposals, that can be personalized and customized, in order to living holidays and free time, according to different lifestyle concepts, in perfect harmony with the place and the natural context.
They also have a short story on their YouTube channel.
Standing on the terrace area looking in on our home away from home it was evident the concept had been well thought out.
On the outdoor terrace, the dining table area had plenty space for all the travel group or a family to relax and eat. There were also large lounge chairs which I had plenty of opportunities to use while sipping my early morning coffee.
One of the features that stood out the most was the Jacuzzi situated in the corner of the terrace. Once heated, the Jacuzzi provides the perfect place for one or two people to unwind after a long day of sightseeing activities.
Inside the same concept continues throughout the interior of the mobile home. Depending on which mobile system you chose, there can be enough space for two, four or six people.
Our ‘Big Brown’ mobile home was the largest of them all with multiple bedrooms, a bathroom, living room, and kitchen to fit up to six people.
Once you settle down in bed for the night, apart from the relaxing country silence, you could easily be in any luxury branded hotel in the major city.
Fully equipped, one feature I didn’t expect to find was the intergraded air-conditioning and heating. It ensures inside can be regulated at a temperature that suits you, no matter how hot or cold it is outside.
Full hotel extras such as clean towels, bathrobes and slippers were also provided so no need to pack them. Each room and the bathroom is fitted with a lock – just because someone always walks in while you are getting changed.
A major plus for many will be kitchen area with full catering facilities, and although we mostly ate out, there was enough space to cook a mini monster banquet.
Kitchen facilities included:
- Stainless steel workbench
- Ceramic top stove
- Fridge and freezer
- Toaster, blender, and microwave
- Various pots, pans, plates, bowls & cutlery
Freedom of luxury
Although we had different trips and actives to keep us occupied throughout our stay, each time we returned after a long day out the atmosphere around the Big Berry Lifestyle Resort was always a relaxed one.
Around the resort, there were seats and shaded beds sitting in various locations.
These little spots of peace provide a private place to slip away from the group and gather your thoughts, work on your next project, or simply meditate.
The river runs throughout the entire grounds and is visible from virtually every part of the Big Berry Lifestyle Resort, including each of the mobile homes.
While breathing in the fresh country air and relaxing so close to the water, I came to the conclusion that it’s hard to find a bad spot anywhere inside the resort.
No matter if you’ve opened the door to a foggy morning mist or are shutting the blinds to a jaw-dropping sunset in the evening, there are spectacular views to be found everywhere you go.
Through our entire stay, the staff at Big Berry Lifestyle Resort went above and beyond the normal call of duty for the other guests and us.
They helped to organise all the various activities, and I’m sure we weren’t the only guys that felt extremely pampered by their efforts. There simply wasn’t anything that was too much trouble for the superhuman BB staff.
Not that we had to request much, as everything we needed was already provided.
Fresh breakfast was dropped off at our doorstep every morning and included a large feast that would satisfy even the fussiest of eaters.
The array of food came from the same local suppliers that provided the welcome basket and including bread, jams, cheeses, ghee, juices, fruit, yoghurt, cereals, milk – too much to list.
It’s also nice to feel like you’re helping out the local business in the area too.
There is no restaurant or cafe located at the resort, so we visited partner restaurants such as Gostišče Veselič and Pri Starem Pildu. However, a very special treat happened on our final night when Hang (one of the BB staff) cooked us some food from her native Vietnam.
I’m a big fan of Vietnamese food + coffee, and Hang did a great job of cooking dinner.
How many resorts have you stayed at where the staff personally cook dinner after they have finished a long day’s work?
Not many I bet.
Being able to relax and mix with the team made you feel like part of the extended Big Berry family. It’s not something that would happen very often in a traditional luxury resort or hotel.
Pure luxury of freedom at its finest.
Is Big Berry for you?
With the fresh air, green landscapes and every need taken care off, it’s hard to think about any of the stresses that might be waiting for you back at home.
The sun bouncing off the surrounding hills, the calming Kolpa River, and Croatia only an arm’s length away, is what makes the perfect spot for bringing family and friends to unwind for a few days – or maybe longer.
If you’re planning to escape from the hustle of the city and looking for a European adventure that’s only a couple of hours flight from most major cities, then I would recommend Big Berry Lifestyle Resort to you.
There’s even a volleyball court and small park to work off the vast amounts of food you will be eating.
Or maybe it was only me doing all the eating!
Finished in mid-2016 the Big Big Lifestyle Resort is a new concept and still in its early stages of its story. To keep up to date with what’s going on at the resort be sure to follow them on the usual social media channels, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
